Hot Water Bottle Cover

Recently, a dear friend who is also a client asked me to make a Hot Water Bottle (HWB) cover . One of her prerequisites was it had to be huggable and cuddly! This gal works very hard, treasures her downtime and deserves serious coziness.

Sure, I said. Hang tight!

Never one to be daunted by a challenge, particularly when it comes to sewing, I began to search for patterns and suggestions on how to go about making this item.

I used super soft brushed cotton for the exterior and pretty cotton fabric for the lining.

This lovely fabric was leftover from a dressing gown I made years ago.

That was a bit of a chilly morning coffee on the front porch!

I came across a template for this hot water bottle pattern from sewist Heather Birkin who’s handle is @Woollyelephant. Her video and description of how to make the HWB cover is great.

The lining is a pretty cotton print that is leftover from a covered headboard we made recently.

Such a cozy guest bed!

Its a little tricky to see, but the fabric used on the covered headboard is what I used for the lining of the HWB cover.

The HWB cover is lined and has a DOUBLE layer of insulated batting to keep the water good and hot for a long time. We gave it a test drive and the water remained steaming hot for two full hours. Not bad!

I enjoyed making this item so much I immediately made another from leftover flannel, and it is now listed for sale on my Etsy store.

One of the best things about this project is all the quilting is done on the quilt sandwich before cutting out the pattern pieces and sewing them together into the cover. I used horizontal quilt lines, then changed to a crisscross of diagonal quilting stitches.
